Eugenia Fort's beach closed to vehicles to protect nesting shorebirds; Hyannis will mark July 4 with drone show

Mark Ells announced that the town will temporarily close vehicle access to Eugenia Fort's beach way to water beginning Wednesday, June 10, to protect endangered nesting shorebirds.
"No vehicles are to be driven on the beach to launch vessels. This closure will be temporary in nature and is due to endangered nesting shorebirds in the area," Ells said, adding that vehicle access will be restored as soon as possible and providing the Marine and Environmental Affairs Department phone number for more information.
Ells also described the town’s Fourth of July plans to mark America’s 250th, including village parades, Main Street entertainment in Hyannis, a harbor boat parade, Aselton Park concerts and a state-of-the-art drone light show at sundown following the Harbor Hawks baseball league game. He explained why Hyannis will not hold a traditional fireworks display on the harbor this year.
"It's very simple. We have to be able to sight a barge more than a quarter of a mile away from these protected shorebird areas. There's nowhere in Barnstable in that harbor that we can do that. And we're not going to violate federal or state law relevant to these endangered species," Ells said.
