Carmel highlights unified sports expansion after inaugural spring season

Carmel Central School District presented a progress report on its new unified sports program at the June 9 board meeting, highlighting the spring bowling and basketball seasons and plans to expand into fall flag football and winter bocci.

Interim director of health, athletics and physical education Tom Baker described a spring season that included 32 participants—13 athletes and 19 partners—and a culminating event hosted with neighboring districts. Baker said the program emphasizes inclusive teams made up of "partners" (students without intellectual disabilities) and "athletes" (students with intellectual disabilities) and noted partnership with Special Olympics for leadership training and program growth.

Student testimony underscored the program’s impact. Colin Weell, an 11th-grade partner, said: "Being on the unified sports team has been truly one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life." A 12th-grade athlete, Jayce, told the board that playing with partners made him "play sports better" and feel "like one of the boys now." Trustees praised the program and asked to be invited to future events.

Why it matters: Trustees and staff framed unified sports as an inclusion measure that builds leadership, social connections and whole-school engagement. Administration said the district plans to add leadership training and additional seasons in coordination with Section One and Special Olympics programs.

Next steps: Administration will pursue fall and winter unified offerings and return with participation data and scheduling details for board follow-up.
