The Mancos Board of Trustees on June 26 authorized two public-safety grant applications: a COPS grant to offset the cost of a school-resource officer and an FBI bulletproof-vest grant to replace expiring vests.
Jason, speaking for the Marshal's office, described the COPS grant and said the town's matching requirement begins at 25% in the first year. "If the grant is approved it will offset the expense of the SRO; our match diminishes over time," Jason said. The board moved, seconded and authorized the Marshall and the town administrator to execute the grant if awarded; the motion passed on voice vote.
For the FBI bulletproof-vest grant, Justin described the formula used to allot grant funding by agency size and noted vests are rotated out on a schedule due to expiration. "It will save pretty much a couple hundred per..." Justin said when discussing the fiscal impact; trustees authorized application and the administrative execution if the grant is awarded.
Both approvals were recorded as passed by voice vote; the transcript does not include a roll-call tally. The grants, if awarded, will reduce the town's near-term operational costs for public-safety equipment and personnel support, with the SRO grant requiring a local match as described in the meeting packet.
