Deuel County approves new jail contract, fireworks permits, AED purchases and $75,000 ambulance funding

Sheriff Cory Borg told the Deuel County Commissioners on June 4 that the county’s intergovernmental jail contract with Grant County would remain at $105 per inmate per day but that Grant County asked for an end date; the board approved the contract with the added end date.
Borg presented two fireworks permits from Powerhouse Fireworks that sought authorization outside the usual statutory window — one for the Crystal Springs Rodeo and one for June 27 at the vendor’s shop — and said he had consulted the Clear Lake and Gary fire chiefs who raised no objections. The board approved both permits; Borg noted any county burn ban would automatically void the permits per the contract.
On AED replacement needs, Borg explained that the county’s current AED models are at reduced battery capacity and replacement batteries are no longer manufactured. "The AED external defibrillator reads heart rhythm and decides if the person needs a shock or not," Borg said as he described compatibility reasons for past purchases. He presented two quotes: M&T Fire (Volga) at $2,170 per unit (nine units, $19,530 total) and AED Superstore at $2,082 per unit ($18,738 total). The commissioners approved purchasing nine AEDs from M&T Fire for $19,530; the board directed that the old units be destroyed.
Borg also reported the Deuel County Ambulance Board unanimously recommended distributing county ambulance funding 80% to Clear Lake and 20% to Gary. The commissioners approved issuing a $75,000 check to the ambulance fund with that split.
