Deuel County commissioners certify June 2 primary and special election results; turnout 54% in primary

The Deuel County Commissioners on June 4 convened as the County Canvassing Board and certified vote totals from the June 2, 2026 primary and special elections. The board reported a 54% turnout for the primary and 43% turnout for the special election and approved the canvasses by unanimous vote.

The canvass presented precinct-level totals and candidate vote counts for multiple Republican races. The board recorded, among other totals, U.S. Senate — Mike Rounds 710, Justin McNeal 255; U.S. Representative — Marty Jackley 725, James Bialota 205; Republican State Senator District 04 — Timothy Begalka 683, Stephanie Sauder 293. In the county-level contest for County Commissioner, District 5, Kent Roe received 241 votes, Tony Alan Quail 113 and Harry Ellis Mewherter 92 as reported during the canvass.

The board also canvassed the June 2 special election on Referred Ordinance B2022-01-09A, reporting Yes 438, No 901, Over 1, Under 3. By random draw the commissioners selected races and precincts for a post-election audit to be held in the courthouse on June 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.; Chairman Jay Grabow drew the U.S. Senate race and Precinct 3 and also drew the Republican State Senator, District 4 race and Precinct 9. Audit results are to be shared with the board on June 16, 2026.

Commissioner Harry Mewherter moved to approve the primary canvass and Commissioner Scott Fieber seconded; the board approved by roll call (Homan — Aye; Mewherter — Aye; Fieber — Aye; Rhody — Aye; Grabow — Aye). Commissioner Judith Homan moved to approve the special election canvass, Steve Rhody seconded, and the motion passed by the same roll-call vote.

The canvass completes the county’s formal certification of the election returns; the post-election audit and the June 16 report will finalize the county’s review.
