Pleasant Hill plans time‑capsule extraction and July 4 public opening; museum to safeguard unclaimed items

Staff said Mountain City Vault Company has donated its time to extract the concrete vault and recommended extracting it before the holiday (staff suggested Tuesday, June 30, weather and scheduling permitting). The vault will be secured on a trailer, moved to the police sallyport for safekeeping and then displayed at Depot Park with a public program beginning at 9 a.m. on July 4; staff expects the vault opening at about 10 a.m.
Because some original owners or heirs may not be present, staff said the historical society will work to return items that have designated recipients and the museum will accept items that remain unclaimed. Staff emphasized plans to avoid family disputes during the public event and described logistics for shade, seating and a livestream for those unable to attend.
In addition, staff outlined plans to relocate evening fireworks and community activities to the fairgrounds, with food trucks, music and vendor tents. Staff encouraged nonprofit participation and said the day program will conclude by noon because of expected heat.
Staff also recapped a recent household hazardous waste collection that served 257 cars, noting the total material weight suggested turnout equivalent to many more vehicles; the city will publish detailed tonnage figures when the regional waste partner provides them.
Next steps: staff will confirm extraction scheduling with the vault company, finalize fairgrounds logistics for the July 4 event and coordinate with the historical society and museum for handling items from the vault.
