Trustees flag handbook language on dress code and photo-posting during first read

At its June 9 meeting the Falmouth School Committee conducted a first reading of proposed revisions to the student handbooks that include updated dress-code language, electronic-device rules and visitor protocols. Several trustees asked the policy subcommittee to refine subjective language and clarify photo/social-media guidance.

Public comment earlier in the meeting had already put handbooks under the spotlight: a parent urged separate review of the Lawrence School handbook and questioned whether some uniform requirements were discriminatory and financially burdensome.

Trustee concerns during discussion included phrases that trustees described as subjective — such as "sexually provocative" or "obscene" — and how those terms might be applied consistently and equitably. One trustee warned that wording focused on "provocative" attire can disproportionately affect girls and suggested the policy be made less gendered and more objective.

Members also debated enforceability: multiple trustees asked how rules like a fingertip rule for skirt length would be monitored, who would measure compliance, and what the district’s approach should be to parents taking photos at concerts and posting them to social media. Several trustees proposed a clarifying statement asking parents to limit social-media posting to images of their own children or to avoid posting images that clearly show other students without permission.

Next steps: The committee asked the policy subcommittee to review the language and return with proposed edits that reduce subjectivity, clarify visitor and photo rules, and ensure consistency across school handbooks. The item remains a first read; further votes will follow after edits and legal review as appropriate.
