Lanett council approves invoices and two resolutions; first reading given for Southern Light franchise

At its Feb. 16 meeting the Lanett City Council approved routine invoices, unanimously adopted two resolutions—including acceptance of an agreement with Sheriff Jeff Nelson—and received a first reading of a proposed franchise agreement with Southern Light, LLC. The Lanett City Council met Feb. 16 and carried routine business including approval of city invoices and two unanimous resolutions.
Councilmember Charles Bagley moved to approve the meeting agenda and Councilmember Krisse Story seconded; the motion carried unanimously. The council also approved the minutes of the Feb. 2 meeting. Councilmember Bagley moved to approve invoices; Councilmember Story seconded and the motion carried.
Mayor Jamie Heard announced a first reading of a proposed franchise agreement with Southern Light, LLC; no action was taken on the franchise on first reading. Later in the meeting the council adopted Resolution 02-26-06, to accept an agreement with Sheriff Jeff Nelson; Councilmember Kim Roberts moved the resolution and Councilmember Charles Bagley seconded. Councilmember Krisse Story moved and Councilmember Denise Zachery seconded Resolution 02-26-08 to select voting delegates for the Alabama League of Municipalities convention; that resolution also passed unanimously.
Councilmember Kim Roberts, chair of Electric and Gas, asked staff to prepare a report listing utility accounts delinquent 30 days or more under Alabama Code 11-43-84 and requested monthly delinquency reporting under Alabama Code 36-12-40. Roberts said the council should draft a resolution to establish an equitable payment-plan process for customers; the council did not adopt such a resolution at the meeting.
The meeting included a commendation presented by Councilmember Kim Roberts to Electric Employee Lane Lauderdale for actions credited with saving a citizen’s life. Department heads gave routine operational updates: Richard Chapman said a water-meter issue should be resolved by the end of next month; airport staff announced a jet-fuel tank delivery, and Police Chief Denise McCain described new virtual-reality training for officers funded by an ADECA grant and camera installs supported by a Project Safe Neighborhood grant.
The council adjourned at 6:42 p.m.
