The Worcester Historic Commission voted to approve replacement of a 27-year-old cooling tower and associated dehumidification equipment at 185 Salisbury Street, the American Antiquarian Society property, after the society’s head of buildings and grounds explained the new unit will be more efficient and will sit on legs rather than on the ground.
Andrew Klay, who identified himself as head of buildings and grounds for the American Antiquarian Society, said the new tower will be relocated 90 degrees from the current unit and that some exterior stairs between the existing units will be removed; he emphasized that most remaining work will occur inside the building. Commissioners raised no substantive objections and the commission found the proposed changes appropriate for the Massachusetts Avenue Local Historic District. The motion to grant a certificate of appropriateness passed unanimously on roll call.
There were no public comments and the commission’s approval allows the society to proceed with the replacement and associated site work as proposed.
