Local coalition promotes BASSET training, 988 hotline and Summerfest baby contest during council public comment

During the public comment period, Denita Morgan, community outreach coordinator for the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition, asked residents to sign up for BASSET (beverage, alcohol sellers and service education and training) on Monday, June 29 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lions Hall. Morgan said the Illinois-certified 4-hour course covers ID checking, alcohol health effects, state and local law, and managing difficult situations; participants who complete the course will receive BASSET certification.
Morgan also highlighted 988, the nationwide suicide and crisis lifeline, noting it is available 24 hours a day for people in mental-health or emotional crises and that counselors generally do not dispatch police or emergency services unless there is an immediate threat to physical safety. "The goal of 988 is to provide support in the least restrictive way possible," Morgan said.
She announced that registration for the 2026 Summerfest baby contest is open. The contest is open to children ages 0 to 24 months who reside within the Reed Kuster School District (registration fee $10 per child); paper registrations are accepted now and online registration opens June 15, with a registration deadline of midnight on July 10. Winners in each age category will receive a trophy, ribbon and parade participation on Sunday, July 19. Rachel Waller, a coalition volunteer, also asked for volunteers to help with the contest and distribution of materials.
Morgan left flyers and business cards at the council chamber table for residents seeking more information or wanting to volunteer.
