The Woodstock Town Board on June 9 scheduled a public hearing for July 7, 2026 at 7:15 p.m. at Woodstock Town Hall to consider a proposed local law amending Chapter 14 of the town code to reduce hazardous interactions between people and black bears.
The chair read the resolution describing the proposal'—based on recommendations from the town's bear task force'—stating the law would prohibit intentional feeding of black bears and require residents to remedy circumstances that attract bears (for example, outdoor storage of food and fruit). The resolution directs the town clerk to publish notice at least 10 days before the hearing and to make a copy of the proposed law available for public inspection in the clerk's office during normal business hours.
Town officials said the draft has been posted on the town website and slightly modified following input from council members; the board encouraged residents to review the draft and attend the July 7 hearing to offer comment. The board framed the measure as an effort to protect both residents and wildlife by reducing attractants and clarifying responsibilities for outdoor food storage.
The hearing will be the next formal opportunity for residents to speak on the proposal; the board may take additional edits or schedule further deliberation after public comment.
