MSD Wabash County Schools board approves 2026-27 handbooks, wireless-device policy and routine items

The MSD Wabash County Schools board on Wednesday approved a set of 2026–27 handbooks, adopted a wireless-device policy and cleared routine financial and personnel items during its June meeting.
Board members voted to accept a package of donations that included $300 from Todd Blair for Southwood youth football; $500 from Gregory and Jamie Herring for Southwood Theater; $5,367.84 and multiple smaller gifts designated for Sharp Creek families and North Spots for competition; and other contributions including a $750 donation from Mayor Tool and Supply. The chair called for the vote and the motion passed.
The board also approved minutes from its April 28 meeting and accepted payroll and claims identified as payroll number 22. Finance staff told the board the education fund was slightly elevated because of coach and extracurricular stipends; staff also said interest earnings on the operations fund may decline as local bond project spending begins and larger curricular purchases were shifted from May to June.
In personnel business the board accepted two resignations: Ben Nestler, a teacher at Whites High School, effective immediately, and Joe Martin, principal at Sharp Creek Elementary, effective at the end of the school year. The board approved multiple hires and assignments, including Rachel Clark as an English teacher at Northwood High School (effective Aug. 10) and Braden Hobbs as an assistant coach at Southwood High School (effective immediately). The chair said the Sharp Creek principal position has been posted and the board hopes to interview candidates in July.
On policy and student rules, the board held second readings and approved the Bridge, elementary and high school handbooks for 2026–27. The elementary handbook incorporated a requested clarification to the immunization form; Southwood high school changes were limited to renaming certain awards. The board also approved board policy 4280, governing wireless communication devices, and indicated the policy will be submitted to the state as required.
The board announced upcoming regular meetings on July 14, July 28 and Aug. 11 at 6 p.m.
