Resident asks council how to vacate platted alley as home sale nears

Sheila Denim addressed the council to request guidance on vacating an alley that runs through properties on Thomas Street in Gravesville. "I'm Sheila Denim and I'm here to see if I can get the alleyway vacated for my property," she said.
Council members and staff explained the legal steps: a formal petition must be filed containing an exact legal description of the portion to be vacated and certified notice must be sent to all adjoining property owners. The council noted that earlier certified notices had been sent to nearby owners but that a properly completed petition and legal paperwork are required before the council can hold the statutory hearing.
Staff and council members also explained the county’s role: the county is responsible for changing the official plat and maps after the council’s order is recorded. Deanna and Elena (city staff) advised Denim to secure legal counsel to prepare the petition and to notify city staff once it is filed so the council can consider scheduling a special session if timing for the pending sale requires it.
Denim said a sale that had been scheduled for June 5 was pushed to June 19 after the alley issue surfaced; councilors suggested she contact a local attorney quickly to prepare the petition and noted that advertising and notice requirements could affect the earliest possible hearing date.
