Select Board pauses one National Grid hearing and approves installation of a pole on South Main Street

The Bellingham Select Board closed a public hearing on a proposed National Grid pole on Center Street after being informed the company is pursuing an alternative design, and separately approved a plan to install a new pole and recloser on South Main Street.
When staff announced the design team was pursuing an alternative for the Center Street proposal, the board did not take the originally proposed action and agreed to close the hearing to allow the company to update plans.
National Grid design engineer Al Galvin (Hopedale office) described the South Main Street proposal as a straight span to support a new 50‑ft pole and a recloser to improve feeder voltage readings and speed outage restoration. "This will add stability to the line, the weight of the lines, the weight of the equipment," Galvin said, adding the change should help close out outages quicker during storms.
No public concerns were raised during the South Main presentation. After a motion and second, the board voted to approve the South Main pole installation per the company’s plan.
