Walkway SID to test revised trash pickup schedule as Saturday overflow rises

The Walkway Special Improvement District board on May 12 discussed rising weekend trash overflow and agreed to test a revised pickup schedule before adding a permanent fourth weekly collection.
Board members described overflowing garbage by Saturday nights and considered a proposal to add a fourth pickup day at $325 per day for the spring and summer months—an increase the meeting minutes estimated would add roughly $4,000 to the SID budget. Rather than immediately approving the extra pickup, the board voted to first ask contractor East Coast Environmental to shift pickup days from Monday, Wednesday and Friday to Monday, Thursday and Sunday and to monitor whether that schedule reduces weekend overflow.
Levie Johnson committed to adding additional trash cans and relocating some Walkway trash cans that abut parking spaces to help reduce overflow at peak times. The board will revisit the need for a fourth pickup if overflow persists after the schedule change.
No formal vote was recorded to approve the added pickup day; the board’s action at the meeting was to request the vendor test the alternative schedule and to monitor results.
