Norman Public Schools honors teachers and student-athletes at June board meeting

The Norman Public Schools Board of Education opened its June meeting by recognizing district teachers and student-athletes for award-winning seasons and scholastic honors.
Dr. Mey Reno presented Darcy Pippens, a Spanish teacher and World Language Department chair at Norman High, with the 2026 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in Secondary Teaching, praising her 28 years in district classrooms, the district-wide elementary Spanish program she helped build, and her national presentations and mentoring. “Please join me in congratulating Miss Pippens on this well-deserved honor,” Dr. Mey Reno said.
Board members and coaches then introduced spring athletic honorees from across Norman High and Norman North. TD O'Hara and coach Greg Gross recognized the boys golf team for consecutive academic state championships and multiple players headed to college on golf scholarships. Norman High coaches highlighted soccer all-state selections including Cole Graves and an all-conference collection of athletes; Norman North coaches presented the 6A 4x400 relay state runner-ups and individual standout performances. Coaches repeatedly noted student-athletes’ classroom performance alongside on-field accomplishments.
Dr. Evelyn Quanza closed the awards portion by honoring speech and debate competitors headed to state and national competition, naming Maxwell Mullikin, SA Lee, Wy Little, and John V. Patel among those who qualified.
The board’s recognitions ran from classroom excellence to athletics and fine arts, with multiple speakers stressing both performance and academic achievement.
