Murray County adopts tobacco ordinance but keeps selling age at 18

Murray County commissioners on Aug. 19 adopted Ordinance No. 2025-02, which updates local rules on the sale, possession and use of tobacco, tobacco-related devices, electronic delivery devices and nicotine or lobelia delivery products.
Representatives from Southwest Health and Human Services, Jenna Stephenson and Mariah Talsma, appeared to provide guidance and recommended updates to the draft ordinance. The board accepted most SWHHS recommendations but voted to set the minimum legal selling age for tobacco at 18, rather than the 21 years recommended by the public-health representatives. The county attorney advised and the board approved the amended ordinance.
Commissioner Roger Zins moved to adopt the SWHHS recommendations with the exception of the selling age; Mark Carlson seconded the motion. The motion passed. The ordinance is listed as Ordinance #2025-02 in county records.
The new ordinance updates county rules on multiple product categories covered by the state and local regulations; the board's motion did not change other SWHHS-recommended provisions.
