Coventry’s Town Council on June 9 approved two construction contracts funded from the voter‑authorized school bond program.
Greenwood Industries LLC won the school bond contract to perform a partial roof replacement at Allen Shan Feinstein Middle School for $4,324,000. Council member Pasqua moved to approve the contract and the motion passed on voice vote. Council members said the project responds to long‑deferred maintenance and will extend the building’s useful life; the work is part of the town’s $25 million authorized bond program.
The council also approved a $185,000 contract with Reeri Carpet Vortex Inc. to remove asbestos floor tiles and install new flooring at Hopkins Hill Elementary School. Staff said both projects are eligible for partial reimbursement under existing state programs, a financing detail the council raised during discussion.
Council members noted earlier choices to delay maintenance had increased replacement costs. “We have to stop kicking the can down the road on building maintenance,” a council member said during debate, urging prompt project delivery once contracts are executed. The council recorded the votes and the measures passed.
Next steps: staff will finalize contracts, schedule work, and pursue available state reimbursements tied to the bond financing.
Speakers quoted in this article are members of the Coventry Town Council and the town staff who presented the bond projects.
