Council members used the general comment period of the March 16 work session to share brief staff reports and community updates.
Councilors praised Hope West for recent community gala events and described a walkthrough of the new public works facility as an example of recent cost‑saving design choices. One member said the National Guard armory building remains vacant; the building is owned by the Guard while the underlying land is owned by the airport, and the armory has lead‑contamination issues that complicate reuse.
Staff updated the council on efforts to move or remove a large rock on Sunset Mesa that posed a possible hazard to the river and anglers; contractors and staff were reported to be addressing the rock while river levels are low. Staff also reminded the public about the State of the River meeting scheduled that evening at 6 p.m., noting it provides an outlook for water operations and Colorado River negotiations.
The council adjourned the work session and planned to reconvene for a short special session after a roughly 10‑minute break.
