On May 5 the Durango City Council approved a resolution directing the city manager to provide monthly updates at regular council meetings about publicly releasable information on the city’s use of the Flock automatic license‑plate reader (ALPR) system.
Councilor moved the resolution after public comment by Ben Peters, who said he had prepared a sample February 2026 dataset showing 48,263 total searches and department‑level breakdowns (he reported 760 searches by the Durango Police Department in that month). Peters urged the city to publish counts of jurisdictions searched, searches beyond retention limits, camera locations and case outcomes.
City staff said they had received Peters’ materials and would compile an initial report for the June meeting, then refine the monthly presentation based on council direction. The city manager’s office and police department said some items could be included only where disclosure is permissible and where operational or privacy concerns do not prevent release.
City Attorney Morgan and staff said the reporting is intended to increase transparency while protecting sensitive law‑enforcement details; councilors asked staff to balance completeness and the time required for police to assemble the data. The council voted unanimously to adopt the resolution.
What to expect: staff will present an initial report at the first regular meeting in June and refine contents with council, with an eye toward department‑level counts, external access requests and redacted examples where appropriate.
