The Brian Head Town Council on May 12 adopted Resolution No. 26-574 extending an interlocal agreement between the town and the Brian Head Redevelopment Agency (RDA), a move the council described as a tool to support future commercial development.
Town Manager Bret Howser summarized negotiations with Iron County and the Iron County School District, saying Iron County approved its end of the extension earlier that morning and agreed to remain a participant for ten more years but requested its contribution drop from 60 percent of captured tax increment to 30 percent—an approximate annual reduction to the RDA of $67,500. Howser said the school district indicated possible interest but that its finance committee will not meet until August, so any school-district participation would arrive after the current property tax cycle.
Council Member Larry Freeberg moved to adopt Resolution No. 26-574; Council Member Logan Cruz seconded the motion. The council voted 5-0 to adopt the resolution. After the council vote, the body recessed and convened as the Brian Head Redevelopment Agency Board, which adopted the companion resolution by the same 5-0 vote.
Howser described the RDA as a strategic instrument to encourage future commercial projects, including a potential skier base village, and noted the town already controls land that could be paired with parking or infrastructure projects if development proceeds. The resolution takes effect upon adoption and the interlocal agreement will be implemented consistent with the adopted terms and the continued participation of county and potential school-district partners.
The council asked staff to continue monitoring the budgetary and revenue implications should the school district later elect to participate in the RDA.
