Shenandoah superintendent announces resignation after five years

Dr. Melody Shepard told the Shenandoah County School Board on June 11 that she is resigning after five years as superintendent, saying she is proud of the district's progress and will help ensure a smooth transition.
"Serving as the superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools over the last five years has been a significant chapter in my career," Dr. Shepard said, noting improvements in student achievement and steady increases in performance measures during her tenure.
In her report she highlighted recent graduations and extracurricular successes, and said the division achieved a 94.7% attendance rate for the 2025–26 school year and celebrated several regional and state athletic and academic honors. The superintendent also noted 441 seniors in the class of 2026 across the division's high schools.
Board members publicly thanked Dr. Shepard. Mr. Rickert said it had been a pleasure to work with her; Miss Carino and Miss Pence offered similar remarks on Dr. Shepard's student focus and data‑driven approach. Mr. Shabi and Mr. Street praised the division's progress and extended personal thanks.
Dr. Shepard said she remains committed to an orderly transition and to supporting staff and students until her departure; the board indicated there will be further public remarks and next steps at an upcoming meeting.
The board did not announce an interim or successor at the June 11 meeting.
