A Kent County Sheriff's Office official demonstrated the Fus platform and the Kent Safety Network to the Cascade Charter Township Downtown Development Authority, describing how the county has tied school radios, body‑worn cameras, business cameras and drones into a single response tool. The presenter said the system was scaled from an ARPA‑funded school‑radio project and is already active in 11 of 20 public school districts in Kent County.
The presenter emphasized privacy and access controls, saying the donor location retains control of streams and that school interior access requires memoranda of understanding: "No access to residential streams whatsoever," the presenter said, adding that Ring and Nest feeds are not available to the system. He also walked the board through an audit trail that logs every access (user IP, length of view and the location of the access), and said those logs can be exported to donors on request.
Demonstrations showed live streaming from cruisers and body‑worn cameras, a "watch me" request function for officers and two‑way communication through body cameras. The sheriff's office presenter described a planned live 911‑call integration that would notify in‑car computers when a nearby call is active so officers can 'jump in' to listen and see related camera feeds. In addressing use of drones, the presenter said the program operates under an FAA waiver to fly remotely up to 200 feet and that drone feeds often arrive on scene before patrol units, providing augmented‑reality overlays that assist in locating addresses.
On scale and costs, the presentation described a two‑path approach for camera owners: a no‑cost integration that supplies a small encrypting box and connects donated cameras to Fus for emergency response, and a paid business instance (presenter cited roughly $200 a year for five streams and about $600 a year for up to 50 streams) for organizations that want their own Fus instance. The presenter said roughly 207 resident cameras had already been registered through the Kent Safety Network landing page and that about 2,200 cameras were integrated via businesses and institutions.
Board members asked about funding and oversight. The presenter said the county has been awarded about $750,000 to deploy this technology and expects another $750,000 for regional expansion; donors retain the ability to request audit reports showing when and why their cameras were accessed. The presenter repeatedly framed the system as a response‑based investigative and situational‑awareness tool rather than a proactive virtual patrol system.
The sheriff's office and DDA staff discussed next steps for local businesses and possible DDA support to help subsidize higher‑tier subscriptions; staff agreed to follow up with the sheriff's office on pilot sites and to return with funding and implementation options.
