Board adopts consent items; policy committee advances Strauss Esme recommendations and construction updates set open houses

At its June 9 meeting the Metuchen Board of Education voted on several consent items and received committee updates that will guide near‑term district work.

Approvals and votes

The board approved the minutes of the May 26 meeting. The roll call produced seven recorded "yes" votes and two abstentions (Miss Cheetum and Mr. Derlinger). The board then moved and carried these consent blocks by roll call:

- Personnel items A1–A12 (motion carried; Mr. Sass noted an abstention on item A3 while voting yes on the other personnel items). - Finance items B1–B18 (unanimous approval by roll call). - Policy items C1–C3 (unanimous approval by roll call). - Curriculum items D1–D3 (unanimous approval by roll call).

Policy committee and Strauss Esme Alert 237

Policy committee chair Miss Cheetum reported that the collaborative review of Strauss Esme Alert 237 — a package covering 21 policies and regulations — resulted in recommendations to update and align local policies. The committee recommended adopting updated language for superintendent duties (P1230), updating graduation standards (5460) and separating diploma guidance into policy 5461. The committee also reviewed family‑leave alignment with NJFLA and FMLA (1643) and recommended the Strauss Esme option for use‑of‑restraint policy 5561 while noting additional communications and legal review are needed before final adoption in future meetings.

Construction and operations

Construction committee chair Mr. Glber reported on a Moss School tour and an interior water intrusion in the older wing that has a remediation plan including drainage. Moss has a certificate of occupancy and a preschool class will be first to use the new space this summer, the committee said. The high‑school cafeteria work remains on the punch list; the district scheduled a June 15 meeting with the architecture and construction management teams to shore up finishing work. The committee announced plans for public open houses at each building in September and October.

Next steps

Committee chairs noted additional work and stakeholder input are required on policy alerts and finish‑work schedules. The board set committee meeting dates for July and the policy committee will continue to work through the Strauss Esme alert items before returning recommendations for final action when needed.
