The Arrowhead UHS School Board approved The Thousand Ships as a core text for the mythology unit in English 11.
Members Wood and Heammer reported from the curriculum committee that the district is restructuring English sequences (moving American literature to English 10 and making English 11 more historically world‑literature focused). Committee members recommended The Thousand Ships as an anchor text for the first mythology unit because it presents multiple perspectives and supports literary analysis and critical thinking.
Member Wood moved the recommendation; the board discussed grade level and instructional materials. "The first unit is mythology... the craft and structure of that particular text was one of the main reasons why it was picked," said Sue, an administrator elaborating on curriculum alignment. The board voted to approve the recommendation by voice vote.
Implementation notes: the change will require new instructional resources; the curriculum committee will continue to refine unit materials and share links to new materials for staff.
