Board rates superintendent 'slightly exceeding expectations' and refines FY27 goals, schedules strategic planning retreat

Vice Chair Hume reported June 11 that the ISD 191 Board of Education completed a closed-session annual performance review of Superintendent Dr. Latana Daniels on May 28 and concluded she is "slightly exceeding our expectations" in her first year.
Hume listed accomplishments the board highlighted: extensive "listen and learn" sessions with staff and families, steps to strengthen teaching and learning, reorganizing district staff roles to address needs, and leadership during Operation Metro Surge. The board said the coming year will emphasize implementation of reorganizational changes and the strategic priorities that follow.
In a follow-up work session, the board and Dr. Daniels discussed and refined FY27 board goals. Key agreed measures included cultural proficiency work (maintain one facilitated retreat per year; principals to report on staff training and readiness; board members to engage with cultural parent and family groups tied to school assignments with two visits per assigned school), supporting and monitoring literacy and K–12 pathways (focus on raising awareness, enrollment and retention especially in K–8 and middle grades), and a clarified category for "facilities projects" (long-term facilities planning, school name change process and property sales) with predictable public updates (suggested twice yearly). The board also agreed to plan a strategic planning retreat in August to launch priority-setting and to receive periodic updates on progress.
Dr. Daniels also delivered her superintendent report noting a busy close to the school year, including Burnsville High School's commencement with 528 graduates and extensive summer programming staffing.
