ISD 191 honors John Koskran Volunteer Award winners, including students and longtime volunteers

The ISD 191 Board of Education recognized the 2026 John Koskran Volunteer Award recipients during its June 11 meeting, honoring students, community members and staff for sustained volunteer service.
Chair Alt introduced the 24th annual awards, named for longtime volunteer advocate John Koskran. Student recipients included Winston Extrand (Burnsville High School), who the board said volunteered more than 200 hours and served as lead team captain for the Brain Power in a Backpack program; Mina Pathini, a rising senior and leader of the Harriet Bishop Service Club who has organized community service activities; and Paige Stone, cited for a reported 1,900 documented volunteer hours over her BHS career, including roughly 700 in her senior year.
Community awardees included a volunteer identified as Goran Nambadopad (tutor for adult learners since 2021) and Sharon Nelson, who supports Neil Elementary's focus program. The staff award went to Wubet Abraha, a community education associate noted for regular volunteering with food resource programs. Nominators' comments were read aloud, including a nomination from Harriet Bishop teacher Aaron Huber praising Mina's work and a note from youth service coordinator Courtney Flowback on Paige's dedication.
Board members offered thanks and applause; the recognition ceremony concluded before the board moved on to presentations on literacy and the budget.
