Duchesne County Library board reviews ALA guidance on labeling and updates Internet policy

At its March 18 meeting, the Duchesne County Library Board received a training and policy review on labeling, rating systems and Internet use.
Director Daniel Mauchley reviewed the American Library Association's position that labeling or rating systems can conflict with the principles of intellectual freedom. Board members were told the library will provide patrons information about available rating systems but will not endorse any specific system; an exception was noted for the use of the MPAA rating system for movies.
The board also reviewed updates to its Internet Policy. New language adds information about copyright laws and the pirating of physical and digital materials; the board discussed how those clarifications affect enforcement and user education but did not adopt additional restrictions or endorse a particular labeling product.
Board members were briefed on technical support needs tied to these policies; a $3,000 Tech Enhancement Grant to replace aging 2018 staff computers was noted during the meeting as a separate operational item to support staff capacity.
