Springdale board appoints Chad Smith to Zone 2 seat after public interviews

The Springdale School Board on June 9 appointed Chad Smith to fill the Zone 2 vacancy, selecting him after public presentations from three candidates.
Board members considered applications from Nancy Bunch, Ginger Lamar and Chad Smith and allowed each candidate five minutes to speak, followed by a question‑and‑answer period. Mr. Hutchinson made the motion to appoint Smith and Mr. Bell seconded it; the motion carried by voice vote with one board member saying, "I opposed."
Board members described the interviews as difficult but praised all three candidates. During deliberations, one board member said the board needed a member willing to press for answers on difficult issues — a role they felt Smith could fill. Smith told the board he would "dig in" and commit to the work, saying he intended to support career and technical education, teacher recruitment and fiscal stewardship.
The board clerk said the appointee will be sworn in promptly and will not participate in the executive session that followed the appointment. The person appointed will serve until the end of the term in 2028 and may choose whether to seek election to a full term at that time.
The appointment followed the board’s public procedure for filling vacancies: candidates submitted petitions, presented in open session, and the board voted in the public meeting. The board chair encouraged the two candidates who were not selected to remain involved in district work and signaled there will be additional opportunities for community members to serve.
