Yellow Springs board: demolition to resume this week; auditorium work expected through October

Director of operations Jeff Iri gave the board a detailed update on the district’s master facilities work, saying modular units are being removed now and demolition of the three‑story building could resume “as early as Friday and possibly on Monday.” He credited custodial staff, summer crew and administrators for clearing buildings and preparing areas for the next phase.

Iri said the project is in a phase‑three stage at Mills Lawn and reported concrete progress in several areas: east‑side classrooms have new carpet, ceiling tiles, cabinetry and sinks; storefronts and interior/exterior finishes are expected within weeks; and rooftop units and the gym roof will be worked on in the coming weeks. “We should have all the mods out here by mid next week,” Iri said.

Work on mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems (MEP) is underway in areas labeled C and D, data wiring is being installed, and inspections are being scheduled to finalize ceilings and finishes. Iri previewed a Mills Lawn facelift starting in early July that will include new pads and a stage.

At the middle/high school site, Iri said demolition of the auditorium/concurrent gym work has begun; under the current phasing plan, the auditorium is not slated to be finished until about October. Board members and staff discussed sequencing to ensure other school areas will be ready for the start of classes while that portion remains under construction.

The board did not take a vote on the facilities update; members thanked staff and said they would continue to monitor schedules and safety protocols as the district proceeds to demolition and finishing work.
