School board approves ban on smart glasses in schools and adopts 2026–27 student rights handbook

The District 196 school board voted unanimously on June 8 to adopt an amendment to Policy 503 that prohibits students from wearing or using “smart glasses” at school and to approve the 2026–27 student rights and responsibilities overview (the student handbook).
Presenter Adden Watenburgger said administrators raised concerns about eyewear that can take photos, video, analyze or transmit information and that the policy is intended to protect student privacy and academic integrity. “This specifically is our proposed prohibition on students wearing or using smart glasses at school,” Watenburgger said during the second reading.
Following a motion by Robin and a second by Jackie, the board approved Policy 503 by a 5‑0 voice vote. The board then approved the student rights and responsibilities overview (motion by Katherine, seconded by Sakin/Saken) by the same margin; staff said the handbook will be posted online and that a limited number of paper copies will be available at buildings.
Kaia Bruce previewed a forthcoming administrative regulation to set rental rates for the new activity center gymnasiums; that item will return for board action on June 22.
What this means: Students will not be permitted to wear smart‑glass devices on campus under the new policy; families will receive the updated handbook electronically and through building-level copies on request.
