Commissioner Walker presented the ad hoc committee update on the Ventura & Ojai Valley Railroad Heritage Trail and outlined a pilot program of four interpretive signs that will be sited along the trail.
Walker said the first four sign locations are: the former Ojai Depot off Fox Street, a trail sign behind Libby Park that will reference the jail, a Libby Park sign about Mr. Libby’s donation and local music festivals, and a sign at Rotary Park marking the Matilah station. "So the first few signs, I'm glad that we decided to start with just four signs because I think we're going to need all of our energy to get those first four signs done by Ojai Day," Walker said.
Walker reported the committee has assembled a design team including Wendy Barker from the museum, Colleen McDougall (artist), Mark Lewis (writer) and others, and said the committee received a quote from Gopher Signs of $3,764 for the first four signs (shipping included) with a seven‑week turnaround. The plan is to complete mock-ups for the July meeting and send files for printing in August.
Commissioners discussed sponsorships for future signs and asked for a one‑sheet that explains sponsorship levels and procedures so interested community members can pledge support at Ojai Day. Walker said the group will pursue additional sponsors after the pilot signs are complete.
