Commission approves combining $4,500 city funds with $10,000 state grant for Downtown Arts District branding

The Merced Arts & Culture Advisory Commission unanimously voted to combine $4,500 in city art project funds with a $10,000 grant associated with the California Arts Council designation to support branding and signage for the Downtown Arts & Culture District.

Staff said the combined funding—$14,500—will support an artist call to develop a logo and branding materials, with the Merced County Arts Council administering the artist selection and the city’s Public Works department producing and installing the approved street signs and banners. “We were awarded that designation, and along with that designation, comes $10,000,” the staff member said, and recommended pooling the $4,500 already set aside by the commission with the awarded grant to achieve a larger, coordinated project.

Commissioners discussed governance and who should issue the call for artists; staff said combining the funds and allowing the county arts council to manage the artist selection would be more productive while the city could serve as producer for the physical signs. The staff member noted production costs through Public Works and said simple, single‑color logos would be used on approved sign backgrounds.

A motion to approve combining the city funds with the grant was recorded by the clerk and carried unanimously. Staff said they will seek any additional approvals required from the city council and return with details on production and installation.
