Arts commission approves Eddie Magana design for Bob Hart Square medallion

The Merced Arts & Culture Advisory Commission unanimously approved a subcommittee recommendation to select artist Eddie Magana’s submission for a medallion at Bob Hart Square.

The staff member presenting the item said the design incorporates imagery tied to Canal Street — a canal, long‑lost historic buildings, orchards and farms — and includes a blossom pattern intended to fit the round medallion required for the site. “He’s incorporated images of the old canal, long lost historic buildings, orchards, and farms,” the staff member said. The presenter said the medallion will be manufactured off-site in metal and will weigh about 300 pounds.

The subcommittee compared two proposals and recommended Magana’s for its durability and how the concept fit the space, the presenter said. Commissioners asked to see the non‑selected submission, and staff confirmed it was included in the agenda packet. The presenter said the artist will work in his studio and then collaborate with the city’s engineering department for installation.

A motion to approve the subcommittee’s recommendation was recorded by the clerk as “a motion by Commissioner Camarda and a 2nd by Commissioner Saragosa.” The commission voted unanimously to approve the selection.

Next steps described at the meeting include returning the design to the city council for required approvals and coordinating installation logistics with Public Works and engineering, according to staff. The presenter said staff will report back on final designs and production plans.
