Committee advances proposal to partner with DMV so students can get IDs

The C committee voted June 10 to send a resolution to the working session that asks staff to explore school–DMV partnerships to help students who face barriers (homelessness, lack of parental support) obtain identification for internships, scholarships and other needs.
Representative Dr. Johnson Law, joining the C committee from Anacostia High School, presented a resolution June 10 asking the board to explore partnerships between schools and the District DMV to help students obtain identification cards.
“It's really just a resolution to say, 'Hey, like we need to explore pathways for schools to have more direct access to the DMV to help babies get their student IDs,'” Dr. Johnson Law said, describing cases of homeless students and students whose parents face mental-health challenges who struggle to obtain birth certificates and IDs.
Committee members spoke in support. One member called the proposal a companion to a previously passed board measure on IDs and said the initiative would help students who face residency, documentation or family-barrier issues. Members asked that staff refine the language before the item goes to the full board and that the committee forward the version the committee voted on for the working session.
The committee called the roll and moved the resolution forward; members present signaled assent. Staff said the committee's voted version will be transmitted to the board, and Jen, representing Executive Director Butler, said staff will help refine the draft language.
Next steps: staff will incorporate feedback and send the committee-approved version to the board for the upcoming working session.
