Board hears attendance rebound and secondary ELA curriculum recommendations

At its June 3 committee meeting reported June 8, the Educational Programs & Policy Committee presented two main items: a report on attendance and the results of a two-year secondary English language arts curriculum study.
Becky Fellenzer, director of student services, reported that overall district attendance has returned to pre‑pandemic levels and in some measures exceeded those levels. The board celebrated the improvement as the result of coordinated efforts by staff and families.
Mark Burns and team members Matt Muhlenberg (English department lead, Hempstead) and Amanda Schuster Davis (instructional coach, Washington Middle School) presented findings from a two‑year ELA curriculum study. The high school recommendation is to adopt the My Perspectives program; middle schools recommended materials that align with the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) sequence already selected at the elementary level. Board members noted the state literacy grant will cover a significant portion of six‑year material purchases, which will be braided with regular district funds.
The committee completed review of several board policies during the meeting and will next convene July 15 for further committee work. The report did not include a board vote to finalize curriculum adoption at this meeting—staff and the committee presented recommendations for future board action.
