North Harrison board approves 27 hires, meal-price increases and MOU to keep three school resource officers

The North Harrison Community School Corporation board met June 11 and approved routine business and personnel moves, set school meal prices for 2026–27 and approved a memorandum of understanding with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department to retain three school resource officers across district campuses.
Board President Josh Bowen called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. and confirmed a quorum. After approving the agenda and minutes, the board moved quickly through routine financial items including claims, payroll and a May 31 bank reconciliation.
The board approved 27 appointments, including teachers, coaches and a band director. Tammy, a district staff member who introduced one of the hires, said, “This is Haley Thomasson and uh she's coming from Rockport.” The board welcomed Thomasson, who will teach first grade, and approved the group of appointments by voice vote.
In other personnel business the board approved listed resignations and retirements and accepted a mutual termination and rescission agreement for bus contractors Alan Fessle and Deborah Fessel, noting the pair are effectively retiring and that whether their routes become corporation-operated will be determined later.
The board approved a first reading of NEOLA policy (volume 38, number 2) and set lunch and breakfast prices for the 2026–27 school year. Approved prices were: K–5 breakfast $1.50; adult breakfast $2.90; K–5 lunch $2.70; grades 6–8 lunch $2.90; grades 9–12 lunch $3.10; adult lunch $4.60. A board member said the district’s prices remain lower than nearby districts even after these increases.
As a late item the board approved a staff transfer listed on the agenda and voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department to maintain three SROs: one at Morgan Elementary, one at North Harrison Elementary and one assigned to the middle/high campus. The board discussed that the county had helped pay all or a portion of those positions in the prior year and that the school corporation will now assume that responsibility; board members said they had reviewed the district’s operational account and believe the positions can be sustained.
Board communications included congratulations to the girls softball team for winning sectionals, recognition for custodial and maintenance staff preparing facilities over the summer and praise for longtime staff member and athletic director Danny Schmidt. Board Member Christina Gunner announced she will not run for re-election to her at-large seat; the filing deadline for that position was noted as June 18.
The meeting adjourned at about 7:21 p.m.
The board’s actions were procedural and included multiple unanimous voice votes; no public comments were offered during the public-comment period.
