“It's critical that diversity is in a committee,” Commissioner Beaman said, urging appointment of someone who can “translate” and be a voice for those living in public housing.
Supporters said the nominee was qualified and that the housing authority’s leadership endorsed the candidate. “This lady comes very well qualified and they look forward to having her on their board,” a commissioner stated during the discussion.
A motion to table the nomination failed. A final roll-call vote approved the appointment with four votes in favor and three against; the clerk recorded the outcome and the nominee was appointed.
