Police Chief Trent Page introduced nominees for the Mt. Vernon Police Department 2023 Officer of the Year and announced Officer Tyler Norris as the winner during the Feb. 5 City Council meeting.
Chief Page said Norris was nominated by Captain Travis Chapman and Sergeant Bruce McDonald for exceptional work performance, a commitment to additional training at his own expense, and service as a field-training officer and member of tactical and high-risk teams. Chief Page described Norris as ‘‘a great asset to the Department’’ who has been ‘‘instrumental in training new officers.’’
Officer Tyler Norris accepted the award and said, "Becoming Officer of the Year is something that I had thought about even before I became an Officer, being someone who goes above and beyond for their department, the community, and squad mates." He thanked his squad mates for pushing him to be his best.
Mayor John Lewis presided over the presentation and noted the council’s appreciation for first responders. The council also reminded the public about an upcoming Citizens Police Academy scheduled for Feb. 24; Chief Page said 25 people had signed up with room for about 10 more.
No formal council action was required to present the award; the recognition was part of the meeting's presentations.
