St. Johns County residents who took the county’s SJC 101 orientation described it as a practical, behind-the-scenes introduction to local government that helps people navigate services and engage with county staff.
“SJC 101 is an incredible opportunity to really get behind the scenes,” said a St. Johns County resident, who described learning about “all the different programs” and the policies that keep county government running each day. The participant said the class answers basic questions residents often have: who the people are, what resources are available and how county operations affect daily life.
The program also highlighted the county workforce’s commitment, attendees said. “The most impressive thing is just really seeing the passion that the people have working for the county,” one resident said, calling repeated sessions “eye-opening.”
Another participant praised the program’s outreach and materials, saying the course and its website present information in plain language and make it easier for residents to stay informed. “There’s never an excuse for us not to know what’s happening in our county,” the resident said, adding they planned to retake the class and hoped to provide input for their family and community.
Several attendees said the orientation improved their ability to navigate county services. One participant said the sessions helped them understand “where I fit in,” and taught them which department to contact when they have an idea, a question or need to report an issue. “This really helped me better understand how to navigate kind of the St. John's County world,” the resident said.
A final speaker described the program as a chance to connect directly with government staff: departments open their doors for tours and meetings, giving residents a chance to see operations firsthand. Organizers and participants framed SJC 101 as a tool for civic engagement, intended to make county government more accessible and to encourage residents to take an active interest in local affairs.
The orientation was presented as a recurring class; attendees said it is suitable for residents who want to learn more about county services, how to contact the right office and how to participate in local government.
