During its June 9 meeting the La Mesa‑Spring Valley School Board approved several personnel and labor items and announced actions taken in closed session.
Board members recognized bargaining leads and reported the teacher contract ratification rate at about 71%. The board approved salary and collective bargaining agreements with the La Mesa‑Spring Valley Teachers Association and subsequently approved a salary agreement with CSEA (classified staff). During discussion the board thanked bargaining teams — including Sheila Porhashim (chair of the bargaining team) and Kathy Sheets (president) — for their work.
The board also approved extensions or amendments to unrepresented management and executive management contracts. One board member asked why several contracts were proposed as multi‑year extensions; staff said multi‑year terms provide stability and are common for contracted executive positions.
In reporting on closed‑session actions, the board announced it unanimously approved settlement number 20260549 and the appointment of Oscar Nava as principal at Braftoft Elementary, Kim Sterns as principal at Aendale Elementary, and Vanessa Joy as principal at Maryland Avenue.
Next steps: the district will proceed with negotiated implementation of the collective bargaining agreements and return personnel contract details to the board as required by policy.
