At its June meeting the Mineral Point Unified School District board adopted a revised policy on student possession and use of personal electronic devices (cell phones, earbuds and smartwatches that permit communications) to comply with a statutory July 1 deadline. Policy committee members explained that handbook language will specify times and locations for permitted use (for example, cell‑phone access during instructional time will be restricted) while allowing administrators the flexibility to set operational details in the student handbook rather than the board policy.
The board also approved routine summer contracts and summer‑school offerings, including instructor hours for band, summer camps, credit recovery and library work. Trustees asked administration to provide documentation of how summer hours are deployed and requested an audit/summary next year to ensure hours reimbursed align with instruction and district objectives.
Trustees approved two SWEEP consortium contracts that allow the district to participate in regional bulk purchasing and shared use of larger equipment, citing cost savings across multiple districts. The board also approved a student exchange trip to Red Ruth Cornwall in March 2027; staff said the trip is funded by participating students and families, and board members requested a short student report and photos after the trip.
In personnel actions the board approved the hire of Kaylee Butress as an elementary special education teacher and accepted a resignation for an instructional assistant. The new hire spoke briefly and said she moved to Mineral Point to work in the community and has prior local teaching experience.
Board members emphasized transparency and asked administrators to publish clearer participation and funding information for optional trips and to return next year with documentation about summer contracts and reported instructional hours.
