Broward school board accepts revised agenda, issues proclamations honoring community leaders and educators

The chair said the superintendent had released a revised agenda and the board found, citing state statute language read into the record, that good cause existed for the change. Dr. Zeman moved to close the agenda and Ms. Hixson seconded; the chair closed the agenda by voice vote after asking for ayes.
Assistant General Counsel Chuck Adams explained public comment rules before speakers were called: "Public comment is governed by school board policy 10-20 and is intended to provide input on the school board's duties and decisions in the overall operation of the school district," Adams said, outlining the requirement that speakers state their name, city and lobbyist status and noting typical time limits of three minutes per speaker and a 30-minute total allotment for non-agenda items.
One registered speaker, Marley Mateo, identified herself as the mother of Nancy Mateo and accepted a proclamation on her daughter's behalf, saying, "I am Marley Mateo, mother of Nancy Mateo. I am very humbled to be here today to accept a proclamation on her behalf." The chair thanked her and closed the registered-speaker period.
District 5 School Board Member and Vice Chair Dr. Jeff Holness presented a proclamation honoring Levi Henry Jr., founder and publisher of the West Side Gazette, noting Henry's role as a veteran and longtime local publisher who "amplified local voices and documented community life." Holness also introduced a recognition for Nancy Mateo and invited family members forward for photographs.
District 6 School Board Member Adam Severa presented a proclamation honoring Teresa Sutton, who the board noted began her career in Broward County Public Schools in 1987 and spent nearly four decades teaching math at multiple high schools and leading extracurricular programs. Severa asked colleagues to cosponsor the recognition and praised Sutton's contributions to student achievement and school communities.
The board recessed twice to take photographs with honorees and reconvened to return to the scheduled workshop once audio/visual staff had reset the system. No formal policy votes or new program adoptions were taken during this special session beyond procedural motions to manage the agenda and recesses.
