At the June 9 Town of Oakland Commission meeting, Glen Gilzine of the Arrow Group briefed commissioners on the recently approved state budget and highlighted a $1.5 million legislative appropriation awarded to Oakland to extend wastewater infrastructure in the north Portland Street area.
"This year's state budget ... Arrow Group successfully secured for the town of Oakland's legislative appropriations request of $1.5 million for the South Lake Apakka initiative," Gilzine said, explaining the funds will support the town's transition from septic systems to sewer service and help protect the Lake Apopka watershed. He described the project as a direct investment to improve groundwater and surface‑water quality, reduce septic systems within the watershed, and support responsible growth.
Arrow Group vice president Ron Braz warned the appropriation is still subject to the governor’s line‑item review. "The appropriation that is in the budget is still subject to veto," he told the commission, adding that Arrow and town representatives will continue outreach during the remaining review period.
Commissioners thanked the Arrow Group for securing the appropriation and framed the investment as important to water quality and town infrastructure. Gilzine also acknowledged local legislative champions who sponsored or supported the request in the House and Senate.
Next steps: staff and Arrow Group will continue to monitor the governor's review of the budget line items and coordinate if further advocacy is needed.
