Board hears K5 and secondary math pilot results; adoption recommended for June 22

Martinez Unified presented the results of a year-long K8 mathematics pilot and recommended two programs for board adoption.
Curriculum lead Amy Espinosa summarized a multi-stage process that began with 64 state-approved materials and narrowed to a final set evaluated by a balanced pilot team of teachers and county office partners. Pilot teachers highlighted strengths of recommended materials: the K5 recommendation (Great Minds Eureka Math Squared) was praised for low-tech teacher guides, embedded fluency routines, clear differentiation, and UDL alignment; the 68/Algebra recommendation (HMH Into Math) was commended for varied assessments, hands-on activities, flexible lesson options and a homework platform.
Espinosa said the district is recommending an 8-year contract for Eureka Math Squared at a proposed cost of $467,893 and an 8-year contract for HMH Into Math at $336,714. The materials will be previewed on the districts website and brought back for formal adoption on June 22. If the board approves, staff plan to begin implementation work on June 23.
Board members asked about the degree of computer or paper-and-pencil use. Espinosa said K5 recommendation is "very low tech," and HMH includes technology components; the district will continue using FastBridge as its math screener while implementing the new curriculum.
The board did not take the adoption vote on June 8; a formal adoption recommendation will appear at the June 22 meeting.
