Commissioners ask fire companies for IRS Form 990s as part of budget review

As part of a new budget review process, Lower Pottsgrove commissioners voted 4-0 to authorize the township manager to request IRS Form 990 filings for fiscal years 2021–2023 from Fire Stations 58 and 59 to assess finances and emergency medical services support needs.
Commissioner Robert Mohollen told the board on Sept. 19 that, as part of the township's budget-review process, he and Commissioner Michael McGroarty have met with every department and are requesting financial disclosures from the township's partner fire companies.
Mohollen said the board will ask each fire company to provide IRS Form 990 filings for 2021, 2022 and 2023 so the township can "explore where they need help and what the Township can do in the budget process to support them and the Emergency Medical Services." He moved that the Township Manager be authorized to send the request letters; the motion was seconded by Commissioner McGroarty and approved 4-0. Mr. Wagner will provide a copy of the letter once it is sent.
Commissioners described the budget round this year as a learning process for staff and praised individuals who led efforts for the first time. The request for 990s is administrative and intended to inform potential budget allocations; no appropriation or change in funding levels was decided at the meeting.
