Perrydale realignment will close road this summer; commissioners press for detour protections

Todd Whitaker of Polk County Public Works told the Board of Commissioners on June 9 that a pre-construction meeting took place for the Perrydale realignment between Dallas and 22, and that the county expects road closure around mid-June (approximately June 16) with reopening around mid-September for construction related to a roundabout project.
Whitaker said the contractor plans to use a south-side detour and initially the contract allowed a six-week detour; the contractor now appears to be seeking about 150 days for the detour. Whitaker told the board he has asked the contractor to put the requested schedule change in writing and to bring it before the board for approval.
Commissioners and staff expressed concerns about public notice (signage and website updates), the potential for dust impacts in dry weather, and the risk that extended detour traffic could damage gravel roads. One commissioner noted gravel roads are less vulnerable in dry season but damage risk increases if wetter conditions occur. Whitaker said the detour agreement has been signed but that some language about impacts to county roads remained unresolved and that he would obtain the contractor's detailed schedule to better understand when detours will start and end.
The board did not vote on traffic-control or repair commitments during the meeting; Whitaker and staff will return with written schedules or changes requiring board approval.
