Cheltenham Township staff told the Public Affairs Committee on June 10 that both community pools opened for Memorial Day weekend and are in good condition, and that a biannual Army Corps of Engineers inspection at the Brookdale pump station was successful.
“We were able to get both pools open for Memorial Day weekend,” Mr. Brown, Parks and Maintenance, said, adding that water conditions are good and the pump station inspection showed notable improvements since the last review.
Staff announced a coordination meeting with the contractor for the Elkins Park Library roof replacement; the contractor is projected to begin work Monday, June 22. Township staff said the work will proceed in stages to avoid exposing large roof openings, daily updates will be provided to library staff, and noisy work is expected largely in the morning hours. Staff noted that a small number of parking spaces will be closed to accommodate equipment but that library access and Church Road traffic should not be hindered.
Parks & Recreation director Bill Salvatore told the committee the Thomas Williams traffic garden ribbon cutting drew about 300 attendees and that Walt Park’s new pickleball courts were opened and drew 79 registrations immediately. He credited staff and efficient capital/grant processing for finishing the pickleball courts ahead of typical municipal schedules.
Phase two of the township’s standardized blue park signage has been completed across parks and greenspaces, Salvatore said, and staff previewed an evening drone show tied to a Cheltenham 250 observance. He confirmed the drone display will start after dark and described the program as a Cheltenham 250-themed show with additional branding surprises.
Why it matters: the updates reflect completed and upcoming capital work affecting public amenities and routine maintenance that shapes resident experience. The library roof replacement is scheduled to begin soon and staff outlined steps to limit public disruption.
Next steps: contractors are expected to mobilize June 22 for the library roof project; parks staff will continue to provide event and facility updates to commissioners and the public.
