Mocking public comment draws board rebuke; student speaker and board leaders urge support for struggling youth

Two public commenters took opposing positions during the citizen-comment portion of the meeting, prompting several board members to call for respect and caution against mocking language.

Shamgar Connors used the allotted three minutes to deliver a provocative and mocking statement about transgender rights and school policies, including assertions about bathroom and athletics access under “policy 2420-P” and inflammatory descriptions of transgender athletes. The remarks included graphic and demeaning language that several board members later cited as offensive.

Molly Denim, the second scheduled commenter, replied directly and forcefully to the earlier remarks. “Everything that was just said is bull,” Denim said, urging students who hear such comments to value themselves and seek support. She called for empathy for children and families navigating identity and peer-group pressures.

In board-member comments at the meeting’s close, several trustees publicly denounced mocking or demeaning speech. One member said the board must denounce hateful and threatening speech and reminded the audience that mockery is not excused as a joke. Another board member reiterated available supports, including Hazel Health teletherapy and the national 988 crisis line, and encouraged families to use those services.

Separately, Dr. Chase clarified an athletics-policy point raised during earlier outreach: participation guidelines follow the Virginia High School League and currently reference biological sex for team eligibility. That clarification was offered as factual context; board members emphasized the limits of the school board’s authority when state-level rules apply.

The board took no disciplinary action against the commenters at the meeting. The public-comment period concluded after the two speakers finished their remarks.
