Chase County hospital seeks $350,000 in annual county support; commissioners appoint new trustee

Chase County Commissioners heard a financial update from Chase County Community Hospital on May 26 and were asked to consider ongoing county support.
Mel McNea, interim CEO of Chase County Community Hospital, told the commissioners the hospital began the fiscal year “nearly a million dollars in the red” and that the shortfall has declined to “about $300,000 now.” McNea thanked the county for prior assistance and asked the commissioners to consider allocating $350,000 a year to help stabilize hospital operations.
The request came during the meeting’s open forum after CCCH Board Member Karra Engbrecht asked that a commissioner attend the hospital board’s May 27 meeting to provide guidance on a possible sale of the hospital’s portion of the annex building. Commissioners said they would note the funding request as they prepare the county budget.
Also at the meeting, Commissioner Kurt Bernhardt moved to appoint Hondo Fanning to the Chase County Community Hospital Board of Trustees to fill the vacancy left by Brad Dillan; the appointment runs through April 1, 2031. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Billie Muehlenkamp and approved unanimously.
The commissioners took no immediate budget vote on the $350,000 request; they recorded McNea’s report and indicated the figure will be considered during the upcoming budget process.
